“For You have made us for Yourself, O Lord,
  and our heart is restless until it rests in You.”  –St. Augustine

Our Mission Statement

We, the Augustinians of the Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel, are members of the worldwide Order of St. Augustine in the Roman Catholic Church.  Centered in the Eucharist and prayer, we search for God in community by sharing our lives, goods and spiritual journey with each other and the people of God.  In harmony of mind and heart on our journey toward God, our experience of common life flows into and shapes our ministries.  We continue to serve the Church in schools, parishes and missions as we seek to discern new paths of service to which God calls us.

Our Vision – As Relevant as Ever

The Church by its nature is missionary. Its goal is to lead all people to God by announcing the Good News of the Kingdom of God and by bringing everyone to a transformative encounter with Christ. The Augustinians envision a world where we, as brothers and sisters in Christ, develop a deeper relationship together on our journey toward God. Of one mind and one heart among religious and laity, we envision a world united on a mission toward faith, hope, love, mercy, compassion, mutual respect, and ministry. The Augustinians envision a world where we, as God's children, actively choose life and hope and seek out the joy of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

To fulfill this vision, we have these priorities in mind:

  • Grow vocations and support the men in formation.
  • Support our professed working in the field.
  • Help all of our men to live joyfully in prayer and community.
  • Care for our retired men and infirm as they live in community and in prayer.

Challenge of Resources

Fr. Bernie Scianna, O.S.A. receives first vows of a young novice.

Despite the fine efforts of our leaders and laity the past 20 years, our ability to support ourselves has been stretched to the limits.  We are a mendicant order, so we must beg for what we need.  In 1990, there were over 100 Augustinians with paid ministerial positions to support our communities; today there are about about 50 that can do so.  In the same period, costs have risen dramatically, especially costs for health care and care of the retired and infirm.  We have responded by:

  • Becoming more efficient and leaner in operation—less than a dozen staff for the Province;
  • Securing experienced laity to advise us on finances and fundraising;
  • Managing our retirement and health care costs while promoting quality of life and community; and,
  • Expanding our Province fundraising to secure more donors and annual charitable revenue.

Greatest Areas of Annual Cost

54% of the Province’s annual budgeted expenses are for our men in formation, our vocations outreach program, and our retired and infirm Augustinians.  There are two independent trusts dedicated to generating revenue for these key programs:

  • The newly established Fr. Ray Ryan, O.S.A. Trust supports the formation and vocations programs of our Province.
  • The Journey of a Lifetime Trust supports the needs of our retired and infirm.

These trusts are underfunded by over $12,000,000.

Our Goal

On September 16, 2014, the Very Rev. Bernard C. Scianna, O.S.A., Ph.D., announced a campaign goal of $3.5 million in the video above.  The documented need to make the trust funds self-sufficient (i.e., generating enough revenue annually to support retired Augustinians and the vocations and to preserve the capital from erosion through inflation) is fifteen million dollars.  We realize that what ultimately can be raised may not be fifteen million dollars.  The Campaign Cabinet, the Provincial Council, and the Augustinians of the Province are committed to raising as much as they can by April, 2016.  We do not get many opportunities to conduct such efforts and we expect to make the most of it.

Prayer to Our Mother of Good Counsel

We have adopted the prayer of Our Mother of Good Counsel, our patroness, as the campaign prayer. With faith in God and St. Augustine we are committed to doing our very best and we hope that you will join with us. We are very grateful for your prayers, your thoughts, and your gifts.

We turn to you, our Mother of Good Counsel, as we seek to imitate your faith-filled life. May we be led by the same Wisdom which God sent forth from Heaven to guide you along unfamiliar paths and through challenging decisions.

Keep us united in mind and heart as we go forward in joyful hope toward the grace-filled freedom that Saint Augustine recommends.

O Virgin Mother of Good Counsel, hear our prayers as we look to you for guidance. Pray for us to our loving and merciful Father, to your Son, Our Lord Jesus the Christ, and to the Holy Spirit, giver of all Wisdom, one God for ever and ever. Amen.
