Fr. I went to an Augustinian high school in Chicago, Mendel Catholic, as did my brothers.  In my freshman year, my father died, and my tuition was paid by The Men's Club and the Augustinians for me and my younger brothers.  The Augustinians at Mendel were role models of an important part of my formative years.  Some of these men are in retirement and need financial support through the Midwest Province.

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

Villanova University '77, St. Augustine High School Seminary '73

Fr. Bob Prevost just recently completed his final term serving as the Prior General, the worldwide leader of the Augustinians headquartered in Rome.  He will begin serving as the Director of Formation in January 2013.

Over 40 years ago, when I first joined the Augustinians as a young seminarian, I had a sense that there was something about the Augustinian Order that I had not found elsewhere.  Dedicated to serving the Church in so many different ministries and missions, lived out in and through common life, Augustinians are brothers and friends whose lives and witness truly make a difference.  This campaign is one more way of continuing the mission, and I am happy to be a part of that.

A story reveals why I am working on this campaign.  A few years ago we were introduced to a young man who was in the discernment process for the priesthood.  He was visiting various dioceses and religious communities throughout the country.  One major issue for him was how a commitment to the religious life would look like at the end of a lifetime of service.  How lonely might it be?  Would he be taken care of in his later years?  How would the members of whatever community he might join relate to its older members?  How would the laity relate to and treat the older religious?  Sadly, in this case, the world lost a good servant.
This campaign has the dual focus of supporting formation as well as supporting our religious in their later years.  It is our job to assure that the Augustinian will never run the risk of losing a good man when he looks at how his later years might unfold.
